The Orgasm Gap

This realization of the orgasm gap by Lisa Wade has brought awareness to many questions I had between men's and women's frequency of orgasm impacting social forces in which privilege male pleasure. The sad reality is that women have one orgasm for every three a man takes pleasure in. This is what is called the 'orgasm gap'. The effects of this orgasm gap has brought myths that women's bodies are bad at orgasm, or that a women's body is more difficult to orgasm and viewed only for their looks. However, this theory from Sigmund Freud was shut down since women having sex with other women would orgasm often. Women also masturbate more to get such pleasure. The sociological consequence is the culture problems contributing to the orgasm gap is the double standard that judges women more harshly than men for casual sex.

Lisa Wade, suggest and argues that women's rate of orgasm compared to men is a function of social forces. She continues to share with us that we divide the sexual experience in line with gender norms: for example the idea that men are sexual and women are sexy. Meaning that men experience desire, while women inspire it. Focus is heavily weighed on the male to experience toward pleasure vs. the women. Moreover, women are primarily looked at for her physical beauty, this can lead to her partner avoiding the chance of providing the opportunity of an orgasm for her since it can lead to worry of her face or body becoming unattractive.

Closing the orgasm gap requires knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge. Both men and women need to understand the clitoris is the key to women's orgasms. People must understand that about 3 top 10 percent of women actually orgasm from penetration alone. Majority of women require clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm.
